Edmonton’s Sun Shines on Ammann Equipment

Edmonton, AB – A week that started with Edmonton shovelling out of a snowstorm ended with the area’s contractors experiencing the best in roadbuilding weather and equipment. Ammann compactors and pavers were front and centre for the Customer Appreciation and Demo Days hosted Friday and Saturday, May 3rd – 4th by Williamson Equipment, Western Canada’s leading source of compaction and asphalt paving machinery, service and support. A good turnout to the event Saturday compensated for a sudden reversal of fate for area contractors Friday. “The weather was too hot and they all went paving,” Williamson Equipment owner Guy Williamson said with a chuckle. “The vast majority of our customers are paving contractors.”

On both days, a large number of the event attendees took particular interest in Ammann’s top-of-the-line AFT 500 tracked asphalt paver, capable of standard paving widths of 8-16’. A cornerstone of European paving technology, the AFT 500’s tamping bar system generates a minimum 88% compaction right at the screed of the paver. Williamson Equipment was able to demonstrate this by having the screed’s sideplate removed and the tamping bar painted a different colour to vividly display this feature during the demo operation. “This efficiently reduces how much compaction equipment you need to roll the asphalt after the laydown,” observed Vic Russo from Sunrise Paving. The AFT 500 was one of two Ammann track-type asphalt pavers on display; the mid-sized AFT 270, with a paving width ranging from 54-107”, is ideal for smaller paving jobs like bike trails, golf cart paths and driveways.

The event’s paver demonstration was consistent, says Williamson, with the quality of the full range of Ammann compactors. The biggest part of the dealership’s extensive Ammann rental fleet was on display and available to test out. Ranging in weight from 1.5-12 tons, the 10 different sizes of combination rollers on display provided compaction using a steel front drum and rear pneumatic tires. “If you’re getting good densities at your screed, you can cut down how many rollers you need behind it,” explains Williamson. “Just one roller can give you the vibratory impact of the steel drum and is able to seal the top of the mat with the rubber tires to give you that nice finish.”

For the Customer Appreciation and Demo Days, Williamson Equipment built test lanes onsite for the Ammann compactor models. Contractors were able to run head-to-head against competitive machines, comparing not only compaction pressures but the effectiveness of the Ammann units working in cohesive material, specifically wet clay. The range included single-drum, tandem and pneumatic ride-on compactors, as well as walk-behind units. “Our walk-behind compaction plates have a patented three-shaft exciter system,” Peter Price, Area Sales Manager for Ammann Canada noted of the showcased Ammann APH 6530, “so we have the clear advantage for unit travel.” The APH 6530 high-performance plate was equipped with the Ammann Compaction Expert or ACE system, which uses a digital meter to monitor compaction results in real time. The system can also simultaneously alter the compaction based on the readings. This saves contractors both time and money by not over-compacting. “This compaction control will stop the unit from compacting on surfaces that have already achieved full 100% density,” explains Price. “As you move to the non-compacted part of the project, the vibratory action automatically turns back on.”

The Williamson Equipment product offering recently grew to include diamond-blade concrete saws. For the Customer Appreciation and Demo Days, the company built a rebar-injected concrete wall measuring 8’ high, 20’ long and 8” thick decorated with a mural of the City of Edmonton. Customers were able to cut up the mural with the diamond-blade chainsaws and circular saws. An area in front of the wall was also used to demo walk-behind concrete saws.

Besides being an authorized dealer of Ammann paving and compaction equipment and boasting a compaction rental fleet of 84 ride-ons and 100 pieces of light equipment, the Williamson Equipment facilities in Edmonton also house Ammann’s North American parts distribution centre. Contractors were given the tour and were able to see Ammann’s investment in parts. Williamson noted that parts from his warehouse are sourced and shipped to Ammann dealerships from coast-to-coast across Canada, as well as to Ammann customers throughout the U.S.

With a personal history of providing Alberta paving contractors with quality equipment and service that dates back to 1983, Guy Williamson says he was extremely proud to be able to showcase Ammann products to his customers, who put the snow behind them and gathered outside for breakfast and lunch at the Customer Appreciation and Demo Days.
