Hagerstown – 50 Years Commemoration

VOLVO POWERTRAIN

Hagerstown – 50 Years Commemoration

Objective

Promote pride in employees and recognition in the community of the contribution that the Powertrain plant has made to its industry and economic region through its 50 year history.

Strategy

Showcase the evolution of diesel power technology and manufacturing innovations through a photographic presentation of products and facilities “then and now.” Highlight the development of the Hagerstown facility through changing ownership and the enduring values of Hagerstown people, leading to its designation as the North American “Centre of Excellence” for powertrains supplied to Volvo, Mack and Renault trucks and buses.

Solution

Hagerstown – 50 Years Commemorative Book

Results/Commentary

Turned to a landscape format with gatefolds on both covers, the 42-page book provided a broad canvass for presenting a diverse gallery of Powertrain’s new and archival photos. The main content focused on key milestones from selected topics in Engineering, Manufacturing and the Community. On the right margin of each double-page spread, a sidebar feature appeared as a booklet-within-a-book presenting a continuous timeline of company events from 1961 to 2011. Throughout the book, quotations from with Powertrain retirees added personal insights and memories of the events depicted.

MEA AwardSCA AwardThis project required the coordination of a vast array of images, interviews and commentaries from past and present Volvo employees. The project was delivered on time for Powertrain’s 50th anniversary celebration. Well received by retirees and current employees alike, the initial print run is quickly running out. Volvo co-ordinators have since found it necessary to begin taking orders for additional reprints as employees wish to pass along the 50 year legacy to family and friends.
